SEPM Carbonate Research Group
Who is this community?
The carbonate research group focuses on carbonate rocks, namely limestones and dolomites. Discussions include trends in facies modelling, isotope geochemistry, carbonate mineralogy, non-marine carbonate depositional environments and carbonate deposition and diagenesis.
There is a two-day carbonate workshop planned prior to IMAGE
Advances in the Understanding and Interpretation of Carbonates
Date: Saturday and Sunday, August 27-28, 2023
Location: Houston, TX
SEPM will sponsor this two-day event scheduled immediately before the 2023 International Meeting for Applied Geoscience & Energy (IMAGE). It will include invited speakers focusing on key carbonate themes and additional presentations covering broader research topics and student projects. The format will encourage strong discussion with ample time for Q&A, and participation from a diverse mix of academia and industry, professionals and students, domestic and international is planned. To be as inclusive as possible, the registration fee will be as low as possible.
Invited oral sessions focus on themes that highlight recent advances in carbonate research:
From Modern Sediments to Deep-Time Carbonate Stratigraphy (Keynote by Charles Kerans)
Deep Water Carbonates (Keynote by Gregor Eberli)
Visualization and Quantification of Carbonates (Keynote by Volker Vahrenkamp)
Carbonate Diagenesis and Pore Systems (Keynote by Cathy Hollis)

The SEPM Carbonate Research Group Meeting was held in conjunction with IMAGE'21 in Houston, TX.
Dr. Mike Pope (Texas A&M University) and Dr. Gregor Eberli (University of Miami)
The hot topic discussion will be led on carbonate sediment transport.
Students had the opportunity to present their poster during the happy hour after the Hot Topics discussion. H
The SEPM Carbonate Research Group Meeting took place as a hybrid event both remotely and in-person in conjunction with IMAGE'21 in Denver, CO.
HOT TOPIC DISCUSSIONS
- Lacustrine Microbial Mineralization: Dr. Maxwell Pommer, Premier Oilfield Group
- Tsunami Event Deposits: Dr. John D. Pigott, University of Oklahoma
This year in lieu of student posters students shared a 2 minute overview of their research topics, including their university, advisors and collaborators, contact information, and a brief overview of their project.
