SEPM Foundation Fund List

List of SEPM Foundation Funds and Endowments

Those listed as “Funds” can be spent down; only the investment income from those listed as “Endowments” can be spent.  For more explanation on the types of funds, see SEPM Foundation The year indicates when the fund or endowment was established.


FUNDS

General Fund (Est. 1984)  Provides for routine expenditures of the Foundation. Routine expenditures include, postage, fund raising, office supplies, etc.

Endowment Campaign Fund  Established to support fund-raising and other SEPM activities; often used to support student research or travel.

Harleton Fund (Est. 1984)  Established in honor of Bruce Harleton to support scientific publications by SEPM.

Dr. Paul Potter Fund (Est. 2022)  Established by Council from monies donated to SEPM in honor of Paul Potter to support student travel.

Eric Mountjoy Fund (Est. 2018)  To encourage research conferences and symposia and publications in the fields of carbonate rocks, diagenesis and stratigraphy.


ENDOWMENTS SUPPORTING STUDENT RESEARCH

Robert J. and Ruth A. Weimer Grant Endowment (Est. 1995)  This endowment was established by Robert and Ruth Weimer to provide support for graduate student research within the broad area of sedimentary geology. Details of how to apply for these grants are located at <Student Grants>.

John E. Sanders Grant Endowment (Est. 1999)  This endowment was established to honor the memory of John E. Sanders by Gerald and Sue Friedman and Naresh Kumar. It provides money to support graduate student research in the areas of coastal or environmental geology. Details of how to apply for these grants are located at <Student Grants>.

Dr. S. George Pemberton Endowment (Est. 2019)  This endowment was created in memory of Dr. S. George Pemberton F.R.S.C.P. Geol., a founding father of Applied Ichnology. This endowment is intended to support education and research opportunities that expand upon the field of ichnology and its integration with sedimentology and stratigraphy. This endowment is open to students, to sponsor targeted research and field work in ichnology and can be used to sponsor research/field conferences focused on ichnology.

Dr. Paul Potter Endowment (Est. 2020) To support research opportunity in continental to shallow marine silicilastic sediments and sedimentary successions, with special attention to be given to support for student research. 


ENDOWMENTS SUPPORTING STUDENT TRAVEL

Ken Hsü Student Travel Endowment (Est. 1986)  This endowment provides travel support to students participating in SEPM activities.


ENDOWMENTS SUPPORTING STUDENT RESEARCH OR TRAVEL

Grover and Sally Murray Educational Endowment (Est. 1986)  Established by Grover and Sally Murray to support SEPM educational activities. These activities range from short course support to student activities.

Gerald M. Friedman Endowment (Est. 2002)  This endowment was established to recognize Gerry’s many significant contributions to sedimentary geology. The endowment provides support to graduate students in sedimentary geology through grants for research, travel to professional meetings or field trips. ENDOWMENTS SUPPORTING OTHER ACTIVITIES

SEPM Endowment (Est. 1986)  Supports general SEPM Activities; often used for student research or travel, as needed.

Arnold and Lieneke Bouma Endowment (Est. 2016)  This endowment is designated to support the attendance of students and early career participants at a Bouma Conference. Recipients of grants from this endowment must be active presenters at the conference and priority will be given to U.S. Veterans and Gold Star family members.

Lloyd C. Pray and Philip W. Choquette Carbonate Endowment (Est. 2019)  To support field trips, workshops, short courses and field courses that focus on the study of carbonate rocks and have a field component.


MANAGED BY SEPM FOUNDATION

These were established to support activities of SEPM sections.  These are managed by the Foundation, but the sections choose how to use the money.

Garry Jones and Brian O'Neill Memorial Endowment for NAMS Student Research (Est. 1999)

This endowment was established by the NAMS (North American Micropaleontology Section of SEPM). It provides support for graduate research in the area of micropaleontology. NAMS awards a yearly research grant to a student involved with the study of micropalenotology. The amount of the grant ranges from $500 to $1,500. Applicants for these grants should apply through NAMS.

Gulf Coast Section Fund

This fund supports activities of the Gulf Coast Section.


Medal Endowments

Endowments were established for to support each of the medals of excellence that the Society awards. These monies help to finance the awards program, namely the production of the actual medals themselves.

    Twenhofel Medal for excellence in Sedimentary Geology

    Shepard Medal for excellence in Marine Geology

    Moore Medal for excellence in Paleontology

    Pettijohn Medal for excellence in Sedimentology

    Wilson Medal for excellence as an early career sedimentary geologist
